Everton look set to break their transfer record for the second year in a row. According to Sky Sports, The Toffees are in advanced talks with Watford over the signing of striker Richarlison. The transfer fee being discussed is an incredible £50 million. This would better the £45 Everton splashed out to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City last summer.
Richarlison only signed for Watford last summer from Fluminense. He was recruited by Marco Silva, under whom the Brazilian started the season in blistering form with five goals in his opening 12 games. This included a strike in the 3-2 loss against Everton at Goodison Park in November. However, he failed to add to his account for the rest of the campaign, as Silva was sacked. The Spanish manager is now at the helm at Everton, and still clearly holds Richarlison in the highest regard.
Everton have lost their top scorer from last season, Wayne Rooney, who completed a move to the MLS in the United States earlier this month. They do still have a lot of goalscoring options, including Oumar Niasse, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Cenk Tosun and Sandro Ramirez. Richarlison, however, is not really an out-and-out striker and can also operate on the wings and make late runs into the box to create chances for himself.
Th £50 million price tag though, is going to be an enormous one to live up to. Even though he is only 21, he is going to have to stay on Merseyside for a long time to come and score goals consistently to justify to seemingly daft amount of money.
Wholesale changes at Chelsea?
There could be a lot of activity going on at Chelsea in the three weeks or so that remain of the transfer window, after a relatively quiet first couple of months.
Reports today at Sky have stated that Barcelona have made a third bid to sign Brazilian winger Willian. The offer on the table now is at £55 million. The Blues have held firm on their stance not to sell the 29 year-old but the Catalans may slowly be starting to test their resolve. However, the prospect of losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid is still very real and so selling Willian may be completely out of the question unless a replacement is finalized.
The move for Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin may be close to completion, after the player’s CSKA Moscow teammate Sergey Chepchugov appeared to congratulate him and wish him on a move to Stamford Bridge, on his Instagram account. There were reports of Monaco rivaling Chelsea’s bid for the 22 year-old and even though no official confirmation has been given, this is the biggest hint yet of the player joining Maurizio Sarri’s side in the Premier League.
Chelsea are also reportedly interested in signing Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain. Sarri, who worked with the Argentine for one season at Napoli, is a big fan and wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge. According to the Daily Mail, an offer of £53 million has been made for the 30 year-old.
This of course, does put the futures of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud in doubt, the latter of whom is being targeted by Atletico Madrid for a loan move.
